I
think of Manoel Costa as a mature painter. And his paintings,
to me, rank among the best in the nation - that I know
of. The treatment he gives to the human figure is essentially
pictorial. And the themes reveal a person with great
knowledge of the topic touched upon.
Observing this Expressionist and abstract phases, I
felt the pictorial value of Manoel Costa. In the first
place, by the composition of forms and colors and, in
the second, by the rhythm and planification of the entire
work. One doesn't sense any error. One sees a great
freedom, but everything is in its place. These are the
essential elements of a good painting and this he has
more than enough of.
Accompanying the evolution of his work over time, one
feels that Manoel is a restless artist, always looking
for a new form of expression. In 1973/77, he reached
the maturity that every artist longs for.
I have no doubts with this creator: he will remain in
Brazilian painting. It will all depend on his transcending
the pressures of the art market. .
